Organic Almond Milk

Saturday, February 06th, 2010 | Author: admin

There are many reasons to search for an alternative to cow's milk. Lactose intolerance, allergies, vegan lifestyle, or distaste for the dairy product are several reasons that consumers are reaching for organic almond milk. This delicious substitute is a combination of ground almonds and water. It can be easily produced at home or found in most organic food stores.

To make almond milk, simply ground shelled almonds in a blender and add enough water to create a thin consistency. This liquid can be used as an option in most recipes requiring milk. Adding fruit and ice to organic almond milk makes a fantastic vegan smoothie. Almond milk is a great resource for calorie counters. There are only 70 calories in an eight ounce glass of milk as opposed to 180 in whole milk. The rich, sweet taste of almonds makes cutting calories easy and delicious. Add one cup almond milk, several ice cubes, cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee in a blender to create a low calorie, frozen latte.

Almonds have many health benefits including Vitamin E, an excellent antioxidant. Antioxidants cleanse the digestive system and help regulate the colon. High levels of unsaturated fat with no cholesterol are an added advantage. Drinking or cooking with almond milk, can help lower the bad cholesterol, LDL, aiding the circulatory system and heart. Switching to organic almond milk may reduce chances of heart attack, stroke, high cholesterol levels and lower blood pressure.

For those that are lactose intolerant, almond milk is a satisfying and nutritious alternative. Almonds contain no lactose. Drinking almond milk instead of dairy milk may alleviate heartburn, acid reflux, sour stomach and bowel issues associated with lactose intolerance.

Rich in omega-3's, almonds work to lower cholesterol and clear plaque in the arteries. Omega-3's are generally associated with fatty fish such as tuna, mackerel and salmon. Nuts are the number two source of high omega-3 fatty acids. Because organic almond milk utilizes unprocessed, raw almonds, all the nutrients and omega-3's retain their highest level of potency.

Like dairy milk, the almond drink substitute is high in magnesium, zinc, potassium, calcium and iron. Increased bone density, regulated digestive and circulatory systems are some of the profits gained from these vitamins and minerals found naturally in almonds.

Organic almond milk is a nutritious and cost effective substitute for its dairy alternative. Processed almond milk is gaining popularity and can be found in most organic grocery stores. Considering other milk substitutes such as soy or rice, almond milk may be one of the tastiest alternatives.
